Coat making

Berlin Coat – Straight Grain

It turns out I really like coat making! This is my second so far this year and I’m already planning more for me and the rest of my family. I enjoy the challenge of learning something new and so when my daughter lost her second coat at school(!!) with winter months fast approaching, I decided I would sew her one rather than hit the shops. In hindsight this may have been a little ambitious given it was already October. Cue the Berlin coat blog tour with numerous beautiful versions shared from across the globe and it wasn’t long until I caved and bought the pattern. Pattern and design details There are lots of features I love about this coat, like the big hood, pleat and tab at the back, which all help to make it a bit different. Clare Coat 12

It’s all finished! And I’m in love. Completely smitten. The supplies and pattern for this project (which you can read more about here) were from my husband for my birthday and it is easily one of the best birthday presents I have ever had! Because it was never going to be a quick project I really enjoyed taking my time over every stage (even the cutting out and block fusing my interfacing!) I made two muslins in the end as I fell between a size 6 and 8. I was closer to a size 6 but I found the muslin too restricting […]

It’s coat weather…so I’m making a coat

Finally I get to mark the beginning of my new and very exciting project – I’m gonna make a coat! It all started with my birthday which was back in November when I got some birthday money to spend. I need a new winter coat. Mine is over 5 years old and needing more than a little tlc. I have buttons missing, the lining is ripped and on top of all that I now realise (thanks to dressmaking) that it is a really bad fit on me! I seem to have quite a short waist and so the waist of this fitted coat is hitting my hips – not the most flattering of looks. I love shopping and even though these days I rarely buy anything, I get tonnes of inspiration from window shopping. I did have a brief look for coats – however the spark of an idea had already planted itself. […]
